An interesting mix of duty free shops can also be found at city centers and airports in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Penang. Kuala Lumpur, the commercial hub of the country, has ultra- modern, one-stop shopping complexes.

Shops are generally open from 9:30 am to 7 pm while supermarkets and department stores open from 10 am to 10 pm.

  • The things that are uniquely Malaysia are handicrafts of local origin. They range from intricate silver, brass, and pewter items to pottery and rattan. The bold designs and dazzling colors of Malaysian Batik set it apart from others within the region
  • One can also shop for other items like designer collections, elegant footwear, exclusive watches, optical items, and quality fabrics. Electrical appliances, electronic equipment, computers, and cameras are also available
  • Fixed prices are the norm in department stores and a number of shops in Malaysia, but at most other places bargaining is acceptable and expected
  • Shops in hotel arcades pay high rents and accordingly prices tend to be higher than at street shops. On the other hand, hotel arcades are very convenient if you have little time for shopping. Moreover, prestigious hotels generally attract quality shops
Obtain a receipt for goods bought and check it is correct before leaving the shop
